NEW – Generac 4000XL Generator FOR SALE
Question:
I have one unit of the Generac 4000XL generator FOR SALE. It is brand new in the box. It has never been fired up. Go to HomeBase etc. and check the unit out. It Price $ 500.00 , You pay shipping from Portland, OR.
Response:
With no disrespect to Gregory, I believe I recently saw a sale ad here in Florida for a 5500XL (I could be mistaken) w/electric start for $600. The only reason it stuck in my mind is I have been thinking about adding a generator to my survival/camping gear instead of relying on the PV battery charger for light at night.

About three years ago I bought a Generac 3500. I chose it because the manual included a wiring diagram, and because it has an oil pump as opposed to splash lubrication. Mine has the slant engine. I was surprised by the lower than expected noise level, then I was surprised by the lower than expected fuel consumption. Looking at the diagram in the store I saw that the full rated output of the generator could be drawn on a single 110 VAC circuit. Some generator sets are center tapped 220, and won’t do for a single large 110 Volt load. The excitation circuit is a mystery to me. Some of it is solid state and potted in so I can’t see what I’ve got. Is there any one out there who can tell me what a "snubber feedback" circuit does? What’s a snubber? Bill Maghan

Does that mean it doesn’t do 220, or that it does something else? >The excitation circuit is a mystery to me. Some of it is solid state and >potted in so I can’t see what I’ve got. Is there any one out there who can >tell me what a "snubber feedback" circuit does? What’s a snubber?
Sounds like an RC (or RL, or, I suppose, LC) circuit that sets the output voltage. My generator’s alternator has a nearly incomprehensable manual that talks about rotating diodes, exitation windings where the associated capacitor changes the operating voltage, and re-energizing the alternator using a "12 V c.c." voltage to the AC output (with a fuse, which will probably blow as it fires back up!). It probably means it can be configured for a single 110 high current, or lower current dual 110/220. — Gary Tait,VE3VBF ; Homepage http://www.primeline.net/~tait Please note that I use the Internet as a research / entertainment tool ,and I shall not recieve Email regarding the purchase, trade ,or reccomendation of merchandise , services, or intellectual property , unless I explicitly request such materials. XL = Extended Life The best price I’ve ever seen on a 4000XL is $697 (Home Depot).

This is correct. I purchased a 4000 xl two months ago from Home Depot for 698.00. The XL is a much better machine than the low line Generacs.
